FIX Tag 55 – Symbol
Order Tag
Symbol identifies the security being traded. It can be a ticker symbol (e.g., AAPL, MSFT), ISIN, CUSIP, or other identifier depending on broker requirements. Symbol is mandatory for all order and execution messages.
Correct Usage
Provide the tradable symbol in tag 55. Ensure the symbol format matches broker requirements (ticker vs ISIN). Some brokers require SecurityID (48) in addition to Symbol. Verify symbol is valid and active for trading.
Common Issues
1) Missing Symbol triggers RefTagID=55 reject, 2) Invalid symbol (not recognized by broker), 3) Symbol format mismatch (ticker vs ISIN), 4) Symbol for expired/delisted security, 5) Symbol missing from execution reports.
